Anganwadis conceptually is a meeting point for children below six years, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers. In Kerala, where 13% of the population are above 60 years of age, children in nuclear families are often deprived of the love and care of their grandparents. The senior citizens are forced to stay at home without any physical or intellectual activity worth the name. Bringing them also to Anganwadis will make the anganwadi centre a more pleasant place where the elderly can share their experiences, tell stories to children and old songs with the younger generations, may read or relax during the working hours of the anganwadi. The children will also learn to know, love and respect elders. The centre shall have facilities for all the functions of the regular anganwadis – class room, dining area, kitchen, immunization room, a hall for mothers, adolescent girls’ meet, etc. In addition, there will be a reading room for the elderly. The whole built-up area will be disabled-friendly. A small kitchen garden and a front lawn/ kitchen garden will be there. The estimate per anganwadi comes to Rs. 14.5 lakh. Funds for construction of 132 anganwadis may be set apart for next year.
